Referral guidance for GPs Scotland Wales Northern Ireland

Patients who live outside of England are not eligible for the Right to Choose scheme, however they can pay for assessments privately.

Please send a referral letter via email to: 

admin@neurodiversityassessment.com

Include in the referral letter:

  • Patient email address and mobile number
  • Reasons for suspecting that the patient has autism and how likely it is that they meet the diagnostic criteria
  • A summary of the patient’s mental and physical health history, including significant previous diagnoses and treatments 

Acceptance Criteria

  • Adults 18+ only
  • Displaying symptoms of ASD with a significant impact on their functioning

Exclusion criteria

  • Patients who do not wish to, or cannot, engage remotely via an online platform
  • Due to remote engagement:
    • Significant visual or hearing impairment
    • Diagnosed learning difficulty or impaired cognitive functioning
    • Severe speech and language challenges
  • Complex mental health comorbidity, where the needs of the patient will be better supported by other specialist services.

These include active or recent:

  • involvement from crisis teams
  • treatment by community mental health teams
  • involvement from drug and alcohol services
  • admission to acute mental health inpatient units
  • eating disorders
  • psychosis or recent treatment for a psychotic episode
  • safeguarding concerns
  • police involvement
  • suicidal ideation
  • episodes of self-harm requiring medical attention
  • lack of mental capacity
